Where to eat in Athens
Athens is an exceptional food city at every price point. Street-level souvlaki, neighbourhood tavernas, and refined modern Greek restaurants all reward the curious eater.
Athens feeds you well at very low cost. Souvlaki — pork or chicken on a skewer, wrapped in pita with tomato, onion, and tzatziki — is the city's definitive fast food and costs a couple of euros at most spots. Monastiraki and Thisio have the densest concentration of souvlaki joints. Gyros are the wrapped version, sliced from a vertical rotisserie. Tiropita (cheese pie) and spanakopita (spinach pie) from street bakeries are the perfect walking snack. The Central Market on Athinas Street is the city's main food market — raw, busy, and worth a walk-through for the atmosphere alone.
- Souvlaki in Monastiraki Square area
- Tiropita from any street bakery (fournos)
- Loukoumades (honey doughnuts) as a dessert
- Central Market on Athinas Street for produce
The Greek taverna is one of the great restaurant formats — relaxed, long, cheap enough to eat well without worry. Look for places with hand-written menus, plastic chairs, and at least a few tables of locals. The standard order: a mezze spread of dips (taramasalata, melitzanosalata, tzatziki) with bread, a salata horiatiki (village salad), and a shared main of grilled fish or lamb. Koukaki, Exarchia, and Psyrri are the best neighbourhoods for genuine tavernas that haven't adjusted their menus for tourists. Avoid anywhere with photos on the menu or a tout standing outside.
- Village salad (horiatiki) as a starter
- Moussaka or pastitsio for classic comfort food
- Grilled octopus — best in Piraeus or along the coast
- Retsina or local wine by the carafe
Athens has a genuinely excellent fine dining scene, built around modern interpretations of Greek ingredients and techniques. Kolonaki and Syntagma are home to the most polished restaurants, with several holding or chasing Michelin stars. The city's best chefs tend to work with hyper-local and seasonal produce — Aegean seafood, wild greens from the mountains, cheeses from small island producers. Booking ahead is advisable for the top tables, especially in summer. Rooftop dining with Acropolis views has become its own category — atmospheric but often premium-priced; go for cocktails if the food menu exceeds your budget.
- Seasonal tasting menus at modern Greek restaurants
- Rooftop bars in Monastiraki for cocktails and views
- Wine bars in Kolonaki for natural and Greek wines
- Seafood restaurants along the Athenian Riviera
